Introduction to the West Coast Beach Resorts of Sri Lanka
As Sri Lanka boasts more than 1,340 km of sandy beaches, you’re never too far from the nearest one. Visitors have long been drawn to the west coast for its beaches and year-round warm weather. The words of the late Arthur C. Clarke, once Sri Lanka’s most celebrated foreign resident, express this; “And always it is the same; the slender palm trees leaning over the white sand, the warm sun sparkling on the waves as they break on the inshore reef, the outrigger fishing boats drawn up high on the beach. This alone is real; the rest is but a dream from which I shall presently awake.”
Since the end of the Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009 careful development and ‘smartening up’ of even budget resorts has ensured that the quality of hotels and services is competitively high. The new highway from the International Airport near Colombo has also helped increase its popularity. Tourism has developed most in the string of small towns such as Kalutara, Beruwela and quieter Bentota, Ahungalla and Hikkaduwa; all offer superb swathes of golden sand with some nearby mangrove-lined lagoons.
Chilaw is situated 66km north of Colombo International airport. A quiet area, ideal for a relaxing beach stay, Chilaw boasts palm fringed golden sandy beaches. This is a great base to do some exploring from whale watching in Kalpitiya to the jungles of Wilpattu plus all the attractions of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle.
Backing the beach, the calm waters of the Bentota Lagoon and river offer the ideal setting for wind-surfing and water-skiing as well as ‘safari’ boat rides exploring the tangled waterways, mangrove swamps and marine life including turtles.
Cottage industries and handicrafts, Dutch architectural influences and a vibrant cultural heritage also contribute to this coast’s appeal.
