Israel Holidays

Israel Holiday Facts

Language of Israel: Hebrew is the official language, however English is widely spoken

Time Difference in Israel: GMT + 2 hours

Currency in Israel: Israeli Shekels. US dollars are also widely accepted.

Flights to Israel: We offer scheduled flights with ELAL (London Heathrow and London Luton), British Airways (London Heathrow) and low cost flights with EasyJet (London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester).

Typical Costs in Israel: By Middle Eastern standards, Israel is a little more expensive than neighbouring countries; however by international standards costs are very reasonable. Alcohol is cheaper than in neighbouring countries, and the quality of produce overall is very good. Fine dining can be expensive, but staple foods and snacks are very cheap. Eilat enjoys VAT free shopping.

Eating & Drinking in Israel: A range of options are available from fine dining experiences to tasty street food. Good restaurants are widely available in cities and in hotels, and the cities also play host to many bars, cafes and clubs. Local specialities include felafel and humus - but in big cities like Tel Aviv you can find examples of almost any international cuisine plus an interesting choice of fusion restaurants.

Tipping in Israel: Tipping in Israel is not as critical as in some other Middle Eastern countries, but it is customary to tip guides and other service staff. In restaurants, a 10% tip is the norm.

Shopping in Israel: Shops in Israel are usually open in the morning and again later in the afternoon (after a break in the middle of the day), though shopping malls and large international shops tend to be open all day. The weekend in Israel is Friday and Saturday, and on these days many shops are not open. Bargain hunters should visit Eilat, which enjoys VAT-free status and is home to several designer shops and malls.

Banks in Israel: In Israel opening hours for banks tend to be 8.30am-1pm Sunday to Friday, plus 4pm-7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. ATMs are widely available.

Local Customs in Israel: At Holy Sites dress modestly and be aware that you may be required to cover your head, shoulders and legs.

Clothing in Israel: Light weight cottons during summer with warmer clothes for winter and the cool evenings. Suitable clothing such as comfortable walking shoes and a windproof jacket is recommend for touring itineraries. Eilat is warm all year round, but central Israel can get cold in winter and warm clothes are recommended for travel during winter months.

Passports & Visas for Israel: All British, EU and EEA nationals require a full 10-year passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of return for travel to Israel.
Visas are not generally required for British or EU nationals. For up to date information on visa requirements, visitors are strongly advised to contact the Embassy prior to travel.

Vaccinations required for Israel: For the most up to date advice please consult your travel clinic or local GP. Further information regarding vaccinations for travel to this country can be found at www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk.

Electricity in Israel: 220 volts AC, 50 cycles. An adaptor, usually 3-pin, is necessary.
