Soma Bay Holidays

Diving Holidays in Soma Bay with Orca Dive Club

Diving in Soma Bay

Soma Bay’s long soft sandy beaches are fringed with coral reef ideal for shore diving and snorkelling. For qualified divers, Orca Dive Clubs house reef is one of the most beautiful fringing reefs in the region. It is accessible from the 420 metre long jetty in front of the dive centre and gives scuba divers the chance to experience fantastic underwater sights right on their doorstep.
Spacious and comfortable dive boats are also available to take you a little further afield to experience some of Soma Bay and the nearby areas breathtaking reefs, with dramatic drop-offs, offering frequent sightings of some of the Red Sea’s big pelagic species.
The Soma Bay marine area is protected and diving centres here operate under environment-friendly procedures

Learn to dive

For those looking to learn to dive, Soma Bay has a wealth of shallow coral gardens making it an ideal Red Sea resort to learn to dive.

Best months for weather/visibility/marine life

Soma Bay is a great place for a diving holiday year round.

Marine life in Soma Bay

You will find a wide variety of marine life whilst diving the Soma Bay area. Sighting of  long nosed hawk fish, octopus, tuna, jacks, barracuda, turtles, eagle rays and reef sharks are not uncommon as well as the usual Red Sea suspects including Lionfish, puffer fish, fusiliers, anthias and anemone fish, along with a profusion of hard and soft corals.

Soma Bay’s Dive Highlights

The House Reef

Stretching from the east to the west of the peninsula, the house reef at Soma Bay is perfect for divers of all levels and is packed with diverse marine life and an abundance of corals.
A 420 metre jetty extends directly from the shore over the reef, with electric cars available for carrying equipment and divers for effortless access.
A lagoon lies at the front of the reef and provides sheltered waters ideal for training.
Coral growth starts directly below the surface and gradually drops down to over 40 metres. Large pelagics often appear from the blue to visit one of the numerous cleaning stations and  turtles, eagle rays and mantas are no rarity here!

Panorama Reef

One of the highlights of the area is this huge seamount rising from depths of over 400 metres, offering exhilarating diving for divers of all levels. There are a number of dives that can be made here on both sides of the reef.
The south plateau is covered with an abundance of hard and soft corals and it is more than likely that you will encounter large groupers, giant morays, blue spotted stingrays, patrolling napoleons, jacks and large schools of fusiliers, who are all frequent visitors. Situated on the drop-off in 27 metres there is a large cluster of giant gorgonian fans which surround a crack in the reef that drops to well over 50 metres. These gorgonian fans are home to long nose hawkfish and intertwined with beautiful soft corals. It is not uncommon to see schools of tuna, large open water rays and reef sharks from this point. Rare encounters with manta rays, oceanic white tip sharks, hammerhead sharks and dolphins are also possible
You will find numerous grottos and overhangs, Gorgonians and soft corals, Jacks, Barracuda, Dolphins, White tip, Grey Reef and Silver tip Sharks..
The north plateau with its pristine hard coral garden is an exhilarating drift dive, but can only be undertaken when weather permits. The forests of gorgonian fans, whip, brush and delicate black corals that stretch out along the drop-off in depths ranging from 27-40 metres are simply breath taking. Large schools of fuseiliers, unicorn surgeon fish, tunas and passing turtles can be enjoyed while you are being carried by the normally strong north

Abu Kafan

Possibly the most spectacular dive site in the area, Abu Kafan rises from depths in excess of 600 metres.
Legendary for hammerhead sightings in late spring and manta rays in wintertime there is superb wall diving on offer here with soft and black coral, giant fan and gorgonians with frequent sightings of schooling jacks and barracuda as well as turtles, reef sharks and the occasional hammerhead or whale shark if you are really lucky.

Salem Express

Around 450 people tragically perished when Egyptian passenger ferry, the Salem Express hit the reef and sank on its return journey from Mecca in 1991.
The 100m wreck is a dramatic yet eerie dive, and a reminder of the destructive powers of the sea.
Her port side is just 12 metres from the surface with her starboard side lying at a maximum depth of 30 metres. Personal effects; luggage, rolls of carpet, portable stereos, even bicycles and pushchairs litter the seabed. Several of her lifeboats lie upright and intact where they fell from their davits to the sea floor. The possessions which litter the wreck always make this an emotional dive which should be done with the utmost respect.
