Diving Holidays in Cyprus

With water temperatures remaining pleasantly above 25C well into October, Cyprus has a longer diving season than most other nearby diving destinations. Visibility is also excellent, often in excess of 30 metres. Seas are usually calm, meaning there is rarely any current to contend with, making the diving great for divers of all abilities.

Overall there are more than forty dive sites in Cyprus including the wreck of the Zenobia (rated as one of the top 10 best wrecks in the world). At the eastern end of the island close to the resort of Protaras and not far from Ayia Napa, there are stunning underwater caves with octopus, lobster and cuttlefish. In the south of the island, close to Paphos, there are also numerous dive sites with colourful reefs, ship wrecks and sea life.

With crystal clear waters, no tides or strong currents to contend with, Paphos is an ideal resort to base yourself in if you are looking to learn to dive.

Whether you are a complete beginner or experienced diver Holiday Designers can arrange diving to suit all levels of ability.

Best time to go on a Diving Holiday in Cyprus

The warm climate throughout the year offers good all year round diving conditions, even during the winter months (November - March) when the water temperature is at its coolest - this is when most divers in Cyprus choose to dive in long wetsuits.

During the summer months (April - October) Cyprus is blessed with hot air temperatures and warm sea temperatures. Most divers where shortie wetsuits during these months.

Diving Highlights in Cyprus

Some of the Ship Wrecks to Dive are:

Wreck of the Zenobia is rated one of the 10 best wrecks in the world, the Zenobia is a real treat for the experienced diver. The Zenobia sank in 1980 only 1400m from Larnaca harbour, she lies on her port side with 104 articulated lorries which can still been seen today alongside the wreck. The marine life in and around the wreck is unique in Cyprus where you will get the chance to see grouper, barracuda, tuna, turtle and trigger fish to name just a few.

Wreck of the White Star sank February 2007 while travelling to Limassol. Lying at 14m-18m, 10 minutes out of Paphos Harbour, this wreck has become home to grouper and bream. It is still possible to explore the lounge and engine room.

A number of shore dives are possible from Paphos:

Amphitheatre is a site to the north of coral bay with fairly good access. The fascinating feature of this dive is what seems to be an amphitheatre at 9m. An amazing light show is produced from the waves above while under the water you can swim along an 8m wall. You will see various overhangs and gullies at this site and look out for the octopus, moray eel’s grouper and trumpet fish.

Church Bay is a very varied dive site, full of swim throughs and beautiful formations with canyons, gullies and overhangs. There is plenty of marine life to enjoy.

There are endless Reef Dives to experience in Cyprus, here are just a few:

Big Steps is a site that begins at 14m and dramatically drops down to a maximum of 42m, part of the Paphos reef that runs parallel to the shore starting east of the Paphos harbour towards the airport. Many overhangs, small walls, gullies, sea grass, rocks and archways can been seen and is home to a large grouper.
Bubbles are rock bottom seabed with large holes in the floor leading to a series on interconnecting caverns and overhangs. With a maximum depth of 9m there is plenty of time to enjoy this site and its marine life.
